Kayak along the coast, look out for sea lions, blue-footed boobies, and pelicans, hike to the home of marine iguanas.
After breakfast, explore the coast of San Cristóbal Island by sea kayak. The slow pace of the kayaks gliding over the water and the freedom to navigate on your own makes this morning in the Galapagos a special experience. Kayakers often attract curious animals, especially near-sighted sea lions, which tend to approach for a closer look! Keep your eyes out for marine wildlife such as Blue-footed Boobies , sea lions, frigate birds, and brown pelicans whose eight-foot wingspan allows them to dive-bomb for sardines at terrific speeds. Make your way to the port and enjoy some free time on the beach before dinner. After lunch, proceed on a hike through La Lobería, a resting place for sea lions and home to some of the biggest marine iguanas in the Galapagos. After a hike to El Barranco – The Cliff – return to the beach for a swim and snorkel with marine birds, keeping your eyes out for the greater flamingo. Observe giant tortoises and lava tubes in the highlands and visit the Charles Darwin Research Station.
After an early rise and breakfast, board a small, outboard motorboat and navigate approximately 2 hours to Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz Island, the largest port town in the Galapagos. Visit the highlands of Santa Cruz. As you ascend by private vehicle, you will travel through several different vegetation zones and witness the landscape become increasingly lush and green by the minute. Here you’ll have the opportunity to view the islands’ most famous reptile in its wild habitat: the giant Galapagos Tortoise. It’s a real treat to see an endangered species roving in this lush environment! With a little luck, you may spot the vermilion flycatcher, which will delight everyone with its scarlet feathers against an emerald-green forest. Explore an amazing network of lava tubes, and underground tunnels formed by hot liquid rock, and return to the port. This afternoon, enjoy a guided visit to the Charles Darwin Research Station, where you will learn about current scientific research and conservation efforts in the Galapagos Archipelago, or opt to embark on a short trek to Las Grietas, a wonderful swimming hole surrounded by volcanic cliffs. Observe flamingos patrolling the nearby salt mangroves and Darwin finches dipping and diving overhead. Keep your eyes out for shore birds like Whimbrels, Ruddy Turnstones, Great Blue Herons and endemic Lava Gulls. Later this afternoon, board a speedboat for the two-hour journey to Isabela Island. Isabela Island is the largest island in the Galapagos archipelago, over 80 miles from north to south, and the most biologically diverse. It was formed by the joining of six different volcanoes five of which are still active today making it one of the most volcanically active places on earth, and the perfect place to continue your Galapagos adventure.
