Join us on our exciting DRAGON’S TRACE excursion that will bring us to Santa Fe and South Plaza Islands, to explore the natural habitats of the fascinating iguanas that inhabit these islands. In Santa Fe, we will visit the white sand beaches and cactus forests, home to the Santa Fe Land Iguana, an endemic species of this island. We will observe these creatures in their natural environment, learning about their behavior and habits.
Then, we will head to South Plaza, a tropical paradise where the three species of iguanas coexist: the Marine Iguana, the Land Iguana, and the Hybrid Iguana. We begin the adventure by picking you up directly at your hotel in Puerto Ayora to embark on a journey of approximately 45 minutes to the Itabaca channel, where the yacht awaits us that will take us on an unforgettable experience driven by our expert staff.
We will sail for approximately 1 hour until we reach the Plazas Sur island, where upon disembarking you will be able to appreciate its beautiful landscape and fauna in its surroundings.
During the tour, you will be able to observe several yellow land iguanas and marine iguanas walking through the cacti or on rocks.
Depending on the time of year, the vegetation changes, in the rainy season it is an intense green color and in the dry season it changes to a reddish orange color.
Along the way you can find several lava lizards resting on the reddish vegetation and the famous hybrid iguanas. Hybridization is generally considered negative, as it reduces a species’ gene pool and therefore its biodiversity, increasing the risk of extinction; However, the discovery of the hybrid iguana in the Galapagos has put experts in a confusing position. The hybrid iguana in the Galapagos is the result of a perfectly natural process that was not caused by human interference, and has resulted in a new and extremely rare species.
After an entertaining walk we will return to the boat to sail to our next destination which is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes away. During the navigation, the chef on board will demonstrate his culinary art to delight you with an exquisite lunch while we contemplate the natural beauty of our surroundings.
We will disembark on the island of Santa Fé, where we will observe its picturesque landscape full of opuntia cacti where a variety of wildlife abounds.
Starting the trail we can observe sea lions resting or playing in the water. This island is home to one of the largest colonies of this species.
This island is home to a unique species that can only be found here, the Santa Fé iguana. This iguana, unlike the common land iguana, has pale yellow pigmentation. They can reach 1 meter in length and are herbivorous, although some have proven to be opportunistic carnivores.
The Galapagos hawk is an exceptional hunter, feared by all other terrestrial species, including iguanas, snakes and baby turtles. It is often seen flying majestically through the skies or sitting on cactus plants of this island.
After an extraordinary day of hiking and exploration we will have a snorkeling activity in Barrington Bay, to relax with colorful fish, sea lions and sea turtles that make this place a great place for snorkeling. At approximately 3:30 p.m. we will return to the yacht to head to Puerto Ayora, at approximately 4:30 p.m.
